EXTRA Program

AYSO Extra is an advanced play program for 9U thru 16U players. Recognizing the need to offer an AYSO based program for higher caliber players, and to help develop players for high school, AYSO is providing a program that offers a higher level of training from more experienced coaches and a higher level of competition for those involved.

The Extra Program requires more travel and commitment, so it may not be right for everyone. This program was designed for serious soccer players and their families and may not be appropriate for strong athletes who compete in many sports. Extra Team players may not participate in Club Soccer. All players will be asked to declare their commitment level to the program and that will also be a factor in the final player selection.  You can feel secure knowing your child is part of a trusted organization and will be given fair playing time.

With EXTRA, AYSO’s core philosophies are still in place: everyone on the team plays at least 50 percent of each game; selection to teams is based on open and fair evaluations; and the teams are chosen to create a competitive balance. AYSO Extra is played in one year age brackets, as opposed to the recreational program (Core) that has two year age brackets. Players are never allowed to play down in age bracket, and only with rare exceptions requiring Regional Board evaluation are they allowed to play up in age.

Region 1678 Extra Teams are expected to play in the Spring Program to prepare them for the Southern CA EXTRA Development Soccer League (SCEDSL).  This league is comprised of teams from AYSO Sections 1, 10, and 11. More information can be found here: https://sites.google.com/view/aysoscedsl/home

Players who are not selected for the Extra team will be notified and are encouraged to register for our Spring or Fall Program. Our recreational program still provides many opportunities for competitive soccer with fewer demands for time and travel.

If the Extra program sounds like the right program for your player and family, watch our calendar for try-out information. Contact the Regional Commissioner at [email protected] if you have any questions.

There will be an additional cost to Extra Players to participate on an Extra Team for items such as uniforms, gear, tournaments, etc.

Fall 2026 Considerations

AYSO National Rule: Extra Rules and Regulations, 2G (page 2:16) states:
"Regions may not have more teams in the EXTRA program division than in its Standard primary program division"

This means that for each EXTRA team, there must be a corresponding Core team.

For Fall 2026, the age matrix for the 10U division is birthdates of August 2016-July 2018. This age range includes both the 9U and 10U EXTRA teams. Therefore, in order to have both 9U and 10U teams in EXTRA, there needs to be at least 2 10U Core teams for boys and girls.

EXTRA teams that are created for the 2026 calendar year will be evaluated during Fall 2026 registration to ensure the Region is following this AYSO National Rule. More information will be given to families/players on each team in August 2026.
